Engineers and IT server operators love Linux the rest of the world just doesn't get it.

I haven't really been following Linux too closely recently. I know that for a long time it did not insulate the user from its UNIX underpinnings well enough to ensure a pleasant computing experience. But Apple has proven with Mac OS X that it is possible to build an extremely easy-to-use UI atop UNIX, and atop an open-source operating system. I expect the powerful Linux developer community and Apple to borrow ideas from one another for years to come.

Windows ME is still built atop DOS, which is no more user-friendly than UNIX, and much less stable. Fortunately, your average Windows user rarely needs to type DOS commands or fiddle with his autoexec.bat or config.sys files (well, sometimes, but not that often).

Similarly, in Mac OS X, you simply never need to open the UNIX terminal app. I would imagine that the same is true in Linux by now.

I suppose I could say, they don't get it "yet" - but I don't believe they ever will.

We'll see. I believe otherwise.
