I did not say that Intel would fail with p4 but rather that T. can not be a safety net for p4. Most of the market would likely to go with dell/comapq/ibm rather than intel. So as long as the trio is using p4 intel is ok. Don't overestimate the power of intel inside. If the trio would switch to amd that would not be the end of the trio but rather the end of intel. 2 out of 3 would do the same but OTOH intel got 3 out of 3 at the moment.
AMD's production capacity has nothing to do with it and if needed amd (with some help from ibm and other foundries) can bring it's capacity to much higher percentage of the market share.
