Hi richard surckla; Re: "The 4Bank Rambus chips are 3 percent smaller than SDRAM chips, making them 10 percent
cheaper than their DDR counterparts when mass produced, suggesting a faster penetration in the
market, Samsung said.
"

That doesn't jibe with what Samsung has previously said about their 4i parts:

...
Circuit layout is optimized, while the chip size is at least 5-percent smaller than other Rambus DRAMs through the application of 0.17-micron design rule.
...

Translation: The new 4i initiative gives relatively small reductions in cost. And since RDRAM is still 4x the price of SDRAM, dropping costs by a few percent just doesn't mean jack. RDRAM is expensive to buy because it is a niche memory, not because it has a huge die size. The incredibly high price tag (relative to SDRAM) has very little to do with Samsung's cost of manufacturing, and quite a bit to do with the fact that very few companies make the stuff.
