Everything is fine.....

In 1607 the menhaden population was so large that explorer John Smith said they were lying so thick with their heads above the water, as for want of nets (our barge driving amongst them) we attempted to catch them with a frying pan."

Since then stocks are greatly reduced. After the menhaden began being harvested by former President Daddy Bush the character of Chesapeake changed. Half of the rockfish (striped bass) in the bay are diseased, the disease caused by malnourishment. The nearby Gardiners Island ospreys have declined from 71 nests in 1995 to 36 in 2001 - declined from starvation. At the nearby Choptank River the loon count dropped from 750/1000 per observation to just 75/200 in the decade 1989 to 1999. Loon flock size shrank from 100-500 birds to 15-40 birds. The sea population is starving even as huge blooms of algae and plankton rob the water of it oxygen since there is no longer any plankton eating fish schools to keep the growth in check.

Everything is fine.....
Yeah, just like the economy.
