The request was for a dedicated calculator chip. Intel chose to design a programmable microprocessor and it was not adopted by the Japanese company.

Intel bought the rights to the microprocessor design and introduced it as the first microprocessor in the early '70s.

On the other hand, AMD never designed and sold a general-purpose microprocessor until the early '90s when the K5 was introduced. AMD has a long history in the Copies R-Us business.
