"where does it say that the material costs to Gateway for the P4 machine and Athlon machines are the same?"

It is well known that P4 materials are more expensive
and hard to find (read again - more expensive).
The P4 case requires additional holders to mount their
heatsink (which is again bigger and more expensive).
The P4 box also require a special power supply with
two additional proprietary connectors. All retail
boxes I happen to see were much bigger than P-III
or Athlon systems (more metal), and were equipped
with bigger auxiliary case fans. All i850 systems
require AGP cards with 1.5V signaling only,
which are newer generation and usually are more
expensive as well.

I think this may drive the price for P4 into negative
territory :)

Gateway marks up the 1400 Athlon machine more because Intel pays most of the advertising cost for the P4 machine.

>>> You can configure otherwise identical 1400MHZ PCs at gateway with P4 and Athlon.
They are the same price - $1,299.

So why would anyone care if you can get a 1.4 Ghz P4 for the same price as a 1.4 Ghz Athlon?....from a even performance standpoint you should be comparing a 1.4 Ghz Athlon to a 1.7 Ghz P4.
