CB:

Not that I want to get into this debate, but middle managers have been taking it on the chin as far as lay-offs are concerned. Also hard hit have been technology professionals. A large percentage of the lay-offs announced since Christmas have been for highly paid tech types.

I wouldn't put any trust at all in the government's figures as they have been proven inaccurate many times over the last few years.

Best, Earlie

Coby, very true that white collar unemployment is lower than blue, but that's always been the case. Unemployment is rising in all classes (albeit at uneven rates). That's why subprime lending is the first (but not the last) to get it's "turn in the barrel" when a recession hits. There's some evidence of credit deterioration affecting subprime lenders (see PVN's and CNC's last quarterly reports, for two examples).

I'm not aware of any publication breaking down debt levels by employment category or by income (but it's gotta be out there somewhere<G>)...

People without a high school diploma are finding jobs. Other classifications are losing jobs.

Credit borrowings may also be being skewed by the rush to bankruptcy by a lot of households and small businesses. Aren't they going to be in credit limbo for the next several months?
