in November of 1966 i am sitting in a restaurant in Gallup, NM drinking spiked coffee with some BITOA (Booze Is The Only Answer) club friends when i should be in high school journalism class. i'm talking about what a good book "Candy" was and hoping they will make it into a movie. (eventually they DID, but the book was much better). i wouldn't put it up there with the greatest of the 20th century though.

i'm curious. how can you nominate a book for that category on the basis of one line or two? and... ("Where's the damned cat? Where's the damned cradle?!") i guess i'd have to read the book to know, but what the hell do those two questions mean?

i've never read any of his books but i read a commencement speech that he gave a couple years ago. it was really good. are you familiar with it?
