As someone without a religious bone in her body, I'll take a crack at that.

First of all, right now we don't know how to do it right. The vast majority of products of cloning are defective. Why in the world would we want to produce defective humans? It would put us into the position of either aborting them or letting them be born into the "recipient class." At such time as we figure out how to clone animals successfully and safely, then we can reconsider the ban.

Secondly, what would life be like for a cloned child? The kid would be raised with the expectation that he would turn out just like the original. Imagine having to live up to the expectations of those who so adored the original that they wanted to clone him or her. Imagine never being allowed to just be yourself, or even knowing just what "yourself" was. The kid would need a full time shrink. There are already enough screwed up youngsters in the world. I don't see any reason to produce more when there are better options for obtaining offspring.
