They already have loads of money.

Who? Directors and producers? Far from it. The real money in entertainment is made by lawyers and agents, the ones who get theirs whether or not a project earns.

Isn't it more fun to tear down tradition, create new mores, and manipulate and desensitize the masses? It must be intoxicating to perceive yourself as a creator of icons and mover of mass sentiment.

Again, fun is not part of this picture. The people who make entertainment are accountable to boards of directors, shareholders, investors, creditors, etc., and none of them are out there to have fun, or get intoxicated by their power to move mass sentiment. The power to read mass sentiment is much more valued than the power to move it.

They're probably laughing up their sleeve at how easily they can push our buttons.

No, they are losing sleep over the possibility that someone else may come along and push the buttons more effectively.

What you read about the entertainment business has very little to do with the way the business really operates.
