Right, Tony. If anything, Sun wants to use its partnership with HDS to get into the large SAN business. One good example is the Bank of America SAN deployed by HDS and McDATA:

Storage system - HDS Lightning
Switches - McData

1) 12 64-port directors
2) 22 32-port directors
3) 4 32-port fabric switches
4) 8 9-port loop switches

This SAN is expected to eventually grow to 3,000 to 4,000 ports in a few years.

Sun and Hitachi are also taking aim at the ESCON mainframe market. Sun already has a relationship with Crossroads for an ESCON/FICON bridge router while Hitachi has a deal with McData. McData, however is the dominant ESCON/FICON director switch vendor with more than 1 million ports installed in more than 5,000 sites in more than 65 coutnries. Brocade doesn't have ESCON/FICON technology.

Emulex gave a downbeat forecast last night so that may account for the action in the SAN market today.

Tony:

"Practically everyone uses Brocade switches, and many use QLogic HBAs. "

That may be true but Brocade does not have a 2 Gig solution while Qlogic is shipping an end-to-end 2 Gig solution, i.e. controllers, HBA's and switches. Brocade is losing market share to Qlogic, McData and, to a lesser extent, Gadzoox and Vixel. I'm not actually convinced that Sun will qualify Brocade's switches. Qlogic also has an excellent relationship with Hitachi so to assume that Brocade will get in at Sun simply because of the relationship is, in my opinion, a bit of a reach. I think Brocade's shooting star is about to flame out.
