Well, maybe you work in the entertainment industry, so know more about it than I do.

I do know professionals, however, and even though they are all in business to make money most of them prefer to do things they find enjoyable or fun. Maybe directors are different from lawyers, doctors, software executives, nonprofit executives, college professors, contractors, and cabinet makers, all of whom I have close knowledge of by my work history, but in my experience all of these professionals, when possible, though working for the money, prefer to do things that they find personally enjoyable and entertaining.

I would be surprised to find that film directors weren't the same way. But you may know better -- you generally think you do.

And many of the artists I know, including one relatively famous family member, like to push the envelope in their art. This is, brain research tells us, hard-wired in our brains -- brains generally like new experiences, they process them in a different area than they process things we have done before and are familiar with and accustomed to. The new experiences release more seratonin than the repetitive experiences, and I assume you are aware that seratonin is a neurotransmitter that is generally associated with feeling good.
