"Where's the all powerful P4?"

Sounds like it's still trying to find the way out of the hangar! Long, long road between where it is now and when it flies (if it flies)

4 out of the top 5 "Performance systems" and 6 out of the top 10 "value" systems go to AMD in the following story on PCWorld.
pcworld.com
The only P4 that figured in the Top5 Performance system (A P4 -1.7GHz) had the following comment:
With a great new graphics card, this system was retested as new, but its processor performance is still somewhat slow. Oops!"

You ain't seen nothin' yet...Wait 'til same level MHz P4's and Athy's are compared on a price/performance basis...A P4's inferior performance at 1.4 GHz compared to a 1.4 GMHz Athy isn't exactly going to instill consumer confidence in a 2.0 GHz P4...

"Is Intel converting all production to this slow poke processor? Oops?"

Gotta use up all those tools as kapkan4u said earlier!

"These are no K6 days folks where Intel ran ahead with the MHz AND the performance crown with AMD struggling behind."

Quite the opposite...INTC is running all out trying to keep pace with the price/performance product lineup offered by AMD...AMD's recent entry into the mobile and server/workstation spaces has heightened the degree of panic at INTC all that much more as INTC margins in these spaces are now poised for the "big fall" now that worthy, perhaps even superior products, are now being offered by AMD in these spaces...The next 12 months could be a real eye opener for the consuming public as AMD approaches 30% market share and begins to obtain the premium pricing that its superior product lineup deserves!

Won't be long now before the AMD mobiles will holding down 6 out of the 10 top spots in PCWorld...

It is hardly fair to denigrate P4 based upon the performance of a Dell system. Dell systems are often notoriously slow compared to other vendors systems, even with the exact same processor.

TechieGuy-alt, Re: "Where's the all powerful P4? 4 out of the top 5 "Performance systems" and 6 out of the top 10 "value" systems go to AMD in the following story on PCWorld."

I looked over their benchmark suite, and it seemed to contain a lot of the same apps that SysMark 2000 uses. From other online review sites, I have found the Athlon to consistently perform better with these kinds of office apps. PCWorld calls their benchmark WorldBench 2000, and like SysMark 2000, it seems to fall short of testing a wide range of applications.

This is just my opinion, but I've found that the types of users that care only for Word 97, Quicken 99, and Communicator 4.06 also tend to be happy with their current 300MHz computers. Those users who wish to experience the newest games, 3D, and multimedia tend to be the ones that upgrade to the higher end PCs, and many online reviews show the Pentium 4 to be more than a decent performer in these areas.

Here's the link to the actual benchmark and the description.
