Re: the necessity of branding

They don't need a brand. They need a number.

Athlon has 9 execution units to P4's 6. 50% more available execution cycles per clock cycle.

Label the 1.2GHZ Athlon 4s as 1.8GHZ chips. On the boxes, in the ads, and on the chips themselves, including part numbers that match the 1.5x speeds - explain what's up only in the very fine print.

Label the clock signal 1.5GHZ Athlon 4s as 2.25GHZ - they perform as well or better than P4 2.2GHZ chips. Intel started this one number is all that matters stuff, let AMD finish it.

No branding necessary, just silkscreen 1.8GHZ to 2.25GHZ in big white numbers on what were 1.2 to 1.5 chips. Intel can outspend AMD 25 to 1 in marketing dollars - but ink and printing one number is cheap and easy and that's all 90% of the buyers will look at anyway.
