I've long believed that the strict application of the syllabic rules of haiku is really only valid if you're writing in Japanese.

When I worked in the movies, I often rubbed up against people devoted to the martial arts. If they asked me if I practiced any, I used to reply that I had a black belt in haiku. Very few laughed.
