We had an absolutely gorgeous day here, sunny, high in the mid 70s on our side of the island, just touched 80 in town, but dry, no humidity. As always, cooled off nicely for sleeping, it's now about 55 out. We have been sleeping under at least one blanket all summer. Our house doesn't have any air conditioning except windows. I can only recall two or three nights in the past twenty years when it was too hot to sleep comfortably. Just doesn't happen. And winters are mild, too--last winter we only had one day of any snow at all, and that was about an inch. We do get good snows every few years just to give the kids a good time, but it melts within a day or two. Of course, Mt. Baker, which is snow covered all year, is less than a two hour drive from Anacortes, so if we want snow any time of the year, there it is. But here on the island, one or two snows a year are it. We probably had ten days below freezing last winter, only one cold snap where we had to turn off the water to the outdoor faucets. No hurricanes, no tornadoes. But we do get earthquakes. Mild ones only since I've lived here, but they say a biggie is coming someday. Well, so is global warming. Anyhow, our new house is anchored to bedrock and built to earthquake standard, so we'll be fine. And we're high enough off the water and protected by Vancouver island so any tsunami shouldn't bother us (though it might wipe out my brother in law, whose house is only about 5 feet above the high tide line, and built on fill.) But wait a minute -- we have enough people here as it is. So I'll figure out something terrible to say about this place so you won't want to come live here. Just give me a minute. Or a few. Or a lot. Sleep well in what they tell me is high 90s out there. I did my time back East, including being in NYC in 1978 when the terrible heat wave hit that had it over 100 for six consecutive days (days I was commuting from Staten Island to Wall Street on the Staten Island Ferry). It was totally awful. Well, off to bed I go. Brrr, I think I may need either to put a light sweater on or close the window. Ah, it's a tough life!
