Talisman will stay in Sudan Edmonton Sun, August 8 By BILL KAUFMANN, SUN MEDIA CALGARY -- Talisman Energy won't consider fleeing war-ravaged Sudan in the wake of a rebel attack on facilities the Calgary-based petroleum producer owns there. Company officials denied Sunday's attack on oilfields damaged any of its equipment, as claimed by members of the Sudanese People's Liberation Army. "There was a failed attempt by a small militia group to attack the Heglig area Aug. 5," said a statement from Talisman. The company's presence in the African nation has been sharply criticized for fuelling a 20-year civil war that's left more than two million people dead. "There were no injuries to staff or security personnel and no damage to production." Talisman said that as a "routine" measure following the attack, production was briefly suspended, but that it has been restored. An SPLA spokesman based in Kenya said the infiltration and raid by one of its commando units inflicted major damage on the oilfield installations. "We do not have the details yet, but they went in and destroyed the installation. We are still taking stock of the damage done," Samson Kwaje said. Kwaje restated the rebel's warning that the oil companies' "investments, whether in the form of installations or otherwise, remain legitimate military targets should they remain in the area." He urged oil companies to withdraw their personnel from the area. But a Talisman official insisted the attack will have no impact on the company's commitment in Sudan.
