jbn3,

OT - I also use Zonealarm. However, if it is configured to allow internet acess to a webserver on your windows system (which it will be if you are running such a web server for public access) then it will not offer any protection against Code Red. You need to apply the Microsoft patch.

If you are not running a Microsoft webserver (IIS) then you will not be vulnerable to receiving Code Red direct from the internet anyway.

Code Red is not a normal virus but a worm which exploits a memory buffer overflow bug in the Microsoft Internet Information Services used to run personal web sites on PCs. All that is needed to catch it is to have a web server running on your PC. A firewall will not help if the outside world can access the web server.

Even if you have a fully firewall protected network, once a copy gets behind the firewall it can propagate very rapidly to any machines configured as web servers.

OT... jbn3... I think the Code Red and Code Red II only attack servers.

The reason I brought up the virus topic on this board is because I became infected with I-Worm.Sircam aka W32.Sircam and from what my provided has told me there are many being infected.

I posted the following on the New Yahoo Board where a member was having a problem:

"Refer to my post #3090. You are having the same symptoms I was having the last few days. The
activty light is the result of the virus (a worm virus) working behind the scenes in your computer.I
did the same things you have been doing... clearing out the cache, rebooting, etc. This virus is called
W32.Sircam. It copies all your email addresses, then starts to propagate itself from your email by
sending attachments from your Documents folder. This virus comes to you by email. The attachment
always has a double extension such as, ZIP.COM or .JPG.PIF or DOC.ZIP, etc. This is where the
virus hides as it is opened and enters your computer. Check your email for attachements with double
extensions. DO NOT OPEN THEM. Once you open one then you are infected. For a free and easy
fix from Symantec go to this link. Once you run the fix you must contact all the people that you or
family members sent emails to with the same instructions I'm giving you. Good Luck."
