Hi Win,

I have indeed been following that story, having a friend whose teenaged son is currently "enrolled" in a "school" like that somewhere out West. I'm frightened for the kid, quite frankly, on a number of levels. Neurological development aside, we simply don't know enogh about the kids' physical and psychological strength to know just where and how to test limits. And the staff in these places? Don't get me started. Think of the population that takes jobs as nurses' aides in old folks' homes and add a measure of sadism and "interest in teens".

That said, however, I have enormous empathy for the parents of many of the kids who inhabit these places. They have children who are, perhaps, truant, repeatedly breaking the law, substance abusing, threatening them and the rest of the family with violence. It's exhausting and frightening. Then a local judge offers them the choice between a stay in a juvenile home and a "wilderness camp". What a terrible choice.
