It's a good thing we postponed the group hug.

If I refused to rent my room to someone because they where black and the government forced me to rent it to the person I had rejected then they would be treating me unjustly even if the reason behind it was to help alleviate a larger problem.

We have two conflicting sets of rights here, the right of free association of the landlord and the basic human rights of the tenant. All these issues are about conflicts between rights. The other day Charlie and I were talking about the property rights of farmers and ranchers versus those of people downstream. We can just say hands off to the government and let people duke it out. Or we can have some laws to try to balance things. I don't think the former would be right because the prospective tenant would end up a bloody pulp. The government has to protect the weak.

As a practical matter, I think it quite unreasonable for the state to force you to rent a room in your house to anybody you don't want there for whatever reason. That living arrangement is way too personal. Big apartment houses are another matter. It would be a shame to have to force apartment house owners to do the right thing, but worse to leave classes of people without housing.
