Jim,

You post is predicated on the assumption that demand will continue to be weak. Right now the retailers are in a bind, they have the back to school demand question, coupled with the "waiting for XP" question. I would bet they are being conservative, and putting very few PC on the shelves.

In two to four weeks, the component manufacturers should start to get orders for the inventory build of pre-loaded XP PC's. By that time there should be a lot of empty shelves. The last month of the quarter should be very good for both AMD and Intel. With a $1 Billion+ ad budget, it will be the biggest ad blitz for PC's ever.

Who knows if the stuff will sell through. But you can bet that retailers are clearing inventory of PC's with Win 98, and will be filling shelves with PC's with XP. A slump... a big bump... and then ???.

John

Jim, Re: "If AMD and Intel were foolish to stuff these OEMs with low price chips..."

This "if" that you are basing your whole argument on has little chance of happening, at least to the degree that you are betting on. I agree that Intel probably gives discounts on high volume orders, but certainly not on the scale of 50%. The evidence that I used in my previous post had to do with the relatively small amount of grey market activity, which suggests that OEMs are *not* dumping their inventory. You can disagree if you'd like, but you don't need to get testy.
