The trust isn't real unless we want to call it real. The only real thing at stake is the good faith of the US government. That's very real and very valuable--more valuable in the breach.

That's all there is behind T bonds, and the dollar in general, and in turn, the world economy in general, more or less. Then there's the funny little timing thing, where a month or so ago, a $trillion+ tax cut was no problem, but now, all those bonds in the trust fund are worthless. Very strange.
