Hmmm, you're coming close to saying that what goes on in jails is more valuable than what goes on in the classes and therapy rooms. I heartily disagree. Grit is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition for what is valuable.

And WRT your second point, assume that if nobody knows what they are really saying, everybody will think they are brilliant. My take is that each specialized environment, be it a jailhouse, a laboratory, or a classroom, tends to develop its own shorthand, both out of expediency and a need for inclusiveness among its members, rather than exclusivity. The same phenomenon is at work here in the jailhouse as in the therapy room, IMO.

The jargon you and I grew up with had some pizzaz. The words had rhythm and sonorousness.

What is 'dis'? They just cut off the last part of a word. No imagination. This is the only word the MTV generation has given us, and I'm not impressed.

We reached an absurd point sometime in the 80s when it came to silly new age and therapeutic jargon. I think it's gotten a little better since then.
