Mykrolis Opens Up 14 Percent After IPO

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Mykrolis Corp.(NYSE:MYK - news)
opened up 14 percent in its trading debut on Friday, after the maker of precision equipment for semiconductor manufacturing raised $105 million late Thursday.

Mykrolis, a spinoff of Millipore Corp. (NYSE:MIL - news), opened at $17.25 on the New York Stock Exchange (news - web sites), up from an initial public offering price of $15 -- which was at the bottom of a previously indicated price range of $15 to $17. Mykrolis late Thursday sold 7 million shares through Banc of America Securities. The shares recently traded at $17.06.

Formerly known as Millipore MicroElectronics Inc., Mykrolis comes to market during a cyclical downturn for the semiconductor equipment industry and in the mist of a heated debate on how long the capital spending slowdown in the sector will last.

``The industry has had a very rapid decline,'' William Zadel, Mykrolis chairman and chief executive, said Friday in an interview. ``We are prepared for a prolonged downturn, from six to nine months.''

Investors, however, seem interested in Mykrolis, a profitable company operating in a sector they have already showed a liking for. Similar companies such as Verisity (Nasdaq:VRST - news), Simplex Solutions (Nasdaq:SPLX - news), and PDF Solutions (Nasdaq:PDFS - news), rank in fact among the most successful IPOs this year.
