<<P.S. Is there really a Gold window at the Hang Seng Bank where you can walk up and buy the stuff? How refreshing ...>>

Yes, for Eagles, Panda, Koalas, Maples, and Cellos, along with Chinese tael bars, nuggets and such. The banks still buy back platinum coins, but no longer sells those.

There are gold denominated savings account at many banks. All bank electronic boards flash currency cross-rates, stock indices, gold, silver and platinum prices.
