But then, when it comes to Palestinian reprisals, the West can't help but identify itself with Israeli victims... Since Palestinians don't enjoy US-paid military gear (jet-fighters,...) they must resort to extreme terrorism like suicide bombers and civilian targets. But what does "civilian" means in Israel anyway? As a high-tech garrison state, Israel boasts a society entirely made up of reservists or soldiers on duty.

That's bullshit. You can argue they can't engage in a stand up fight against the Israeli army and you would be right, but they can use guerilla tactics or direct there bombers against the harder targets of the Israeli military. Sure it would be a bit harder, but war isn't easy if they view this as a war. The difficulty of war is not an excuse to target civilians. Civilian is an important distinction the claim that it isn't is nonsense. Is a small child or a 85 year old great grandmother a reservist?

Also the recent violence wasn't a retaliation by the Palestinians. They didn't like the way the negotiations had been going (even though they got most of what they asked for and what they got would have been considered impossible by the Israelis a few years earlier) so they decided to use violence. Since the recent round of violence started Israel hasn't exactly been pure as the driven snow but they are not targeting civilians.

Brilliant post, Gus. It is amazing how the numbers killed by the Israelis consistently outnumber their own casualties, yet the American media only seems to hype up the Israeli deaths.
