George, I had that problem, and i'll tell you one of the pieces of advice I was given.

To stop running programs from interrupting your defrag, install a convenient piece of software called EndItAll. It will shut down everything except Explorer and Systray, which are protected (they show a lock symbol). Then turn off your screensaver. (Do you know how to do that?)

After you have EndItAll, it is so convenient to close down your programs when installing new software that you'll actually do it.

You have to reboot your computer after using EndItAll, btw, to wake up your programs, like anti-virus protection, etc, again, btw.

Edit: Tell us if it works....

If E's suggestion of shutting down running programs and disabling your screensaver don't do the trick try booting up in safe mode by restarting and holding down the Ctrl key after you hear the beeps. Choose safe mode from the choices and try defrag and scandisk from there.
