I wouldn't equate those shows to sideshows. I think that the way alliances are formed (and evolve) on Survivor, for instance, say a lot about how people value gender, age, specific skills. I'm interested in the way treachery plays out, how peers reward or punish such behavior...

I disagree. It's fascinating to watch the people who walk through the sideshow tents. And the people who present the sideshows. I used to love going to the race track once upon a time. I always sat in the grandstand and watched the bums rubbing shoulders with the mink coats. Fascinating bit of Americana.
