Why firewall? For cable

Cuz any connection to the internet that is more or less "on" all the time can be hacked into.

Both cable and DSL are basically "connected" all the time.

Same as DSL. Always on connection leaves you open for attack. Now that I have a personal fire wall I would use one for a dial up connection as well! Better safe than sorry.
