The British will now take over stem cell research lead.......Scientists and pharmaceutical companies everywhere are scrambling to get their stem cell efforts together. American scientists discovered many of the basic facts about stem cells in 1999. But where law and funding are concerned, the Brits have the right stuff to win the stem cell war.

The reason the Redcoats are coming is that Britain passed a law last year that goes beyond the american rules about stem cell research. The House of Lords, in an 11th hour compromise, voted to legalize the creation and destruction of embryos for stem cell research, but we have that, too. The House of Lords went further though, agreeing even to allow the creation of embryonic clones for stem cell research. The compromise was even more dramatic: The House of Lords demanded that a commission look at the ethics of all stem cell research on an ongoing basis. It is the best put together plan for stem cell research one could dream up.
