Tom, The Lutheran church sprang from the Catholic church in protest of the doctrine, and rituals, of that church. All other Protestant churches then evolved from the Lutheran, that became a bit twisted in their rituals after the death of Martin Luther.

Peter did start, and foster, the Christian movement in Rome, but what the Roman Catholic church has become, with it's men celibate, wearing brocaded robes, adorned with very expensive jewelry, ringing bells at odd times during contrived, and lengthy, rituals, burning incense, and considering themselves closer to God than the average, but dedicated, Christian, living in opulence, surrounded by gold, and fine art while the majority of it's followers live in poverty, was by no stretch of the imagination what either Peter, or Jesus, intended. If any person wishes to worship in the Catholic sect of Christianity, that is their privilege, and I wish them well, but when, on quite a few occasions, I have been told I will go to hell unless I join the Catholic church, I will say what I think about such a ridiculous suggestion.

"I cannot speak to what other Christian religions set as rules"

Do you view the other Christian sects (non Catholics) as being legitimate? Are they viewed by God as equal iyo?
