Proponents of broader research talked tough Thursday.

Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash., said the president "walked right up to the line, but then refused to take leadership. It's like stepping on the air hose of somebody who's on oxygen."

Added Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif.: "The president explained why stem-cell research was so important to American families and then put a strait jacket around that research."

Rep. Jim Langevin, D-R.I., a quadriplegic, had parted company with pro-life supporters to back efforts to find a cure for his spinal cord injury along with a host of other ailments. He predicted that Bush "will have to revisit his decision" when research shows that more stem cells are needed.
