Eric, technically that isn't a ban of .223 or .22 ammo. That's what had me confused. You are talking about a ban on using that ammo to hunt big game, not on using it at all, or just having it. I knew .22 ammo was not banned so I thought it would be stupid to ban .223. You post shows that it really wasn't a ban of .223 but a ban on using small caliber ammo to hunt big game. That type of law makes a bit more sense.

except that cougar may be hunted with a .22 caliber centerfire rifle.

I think I would want something a little bit bigger. .22 isn't likely to put them down quickly unless you get a really good shot and I wouldn't want to have to tangle with a wounded cougar at close range.
