I would nominate the TXN news as the catalyst. Just don't believe that Greenie would make a rate cut on a Friday, he got enough flack about doing it the day before expiration last time. But, hmmmm, next Thursday would fit his pattern -gg-

I just read that it was positive comments from TXN that moved the market. And funnily enough, it's ML again. Honestly. I can't help finding that curious. ML prompted the recent rally in semis, with its upgrades -- the rally that pushed the SOX over the 200 SMA briefly.

Briefing.com: "Merrill Lynch analyst Joe Osha hosted a call with TXN's Senior Vice President of high performance analog and it looks like the call went well. The company says it is experiencing stabilization in its analog order backlog. ... Merrill Lynch says this news is better than expected and reiterates the firm's Buy rating on the shares. The semiconductor index has responded to this report as the SOX (+0.5%) has now edged into positive ground and towards the best levels of the session. "
