Well, I don't know. When I was growing up, the priests were pretty mellow about this stuff, but Vatican II was more than a distant memory, too. I was a little surprised to see the harshness of the original language, but I missed out on the Baltimore Catechism too. On another topic, did you catch this article in the Sunday paper? nytimes.com A little rough, but it reminded me of some of the stories that used to get posted on SI, while the abortion warriors were fulminating on and on as usual.
