Evil of evils, Sam Houston Race Park is shutting down Sunday evening racing this Fall. We will still have Sundays for the 25% horses who are running now, but when the thoroughly bread ones start their season in late Sept., no Sundays. This messes me up. I don't like Fridays because $1 beer night and a free concert by some hillbilly group or another brings out the drunks and lowlifes who don't even care that there is a horse race taking place. I don't like Saturday nights because it is too crowded and the track doesn't enforce the no-smoking rules. I don't mind asking one person not to smoke in the healthy lungs and heart section, but when there are a hundred of them puffing away, it not only takes all my time to play cop, I run the risk of the wolf pack daring to turn on the grizzly. A coughing, wheezing wolf pack, perhaps, but sharp yellow teeth, all the same. <g> So, Sunday was a good night. Very few other folks showed up. The races ended at 9, which gave me plenty of time to get some sleep before work on Monday morning. Now, I will probably go on Wednesdays or Thursdays, when the races end at 11. 11 doesn't sound so late, but my Mom lives about 45 minutes from the track and my girlfriend about 15 minutes from Mom. Then, if we add in some of my super suave love god moves on my Main Squeeze and she lets me get lucky, I use up another 30 seconds. <G> Then there is a 20 minute drive from her place to mine. Yes, sometimes one of those drives is eliminated, but it is usually close to one by the time I hit the sack for more than 30 seconds. So, this fall, if I sound groggy on Thursday or Friday mornings, there will be a good reason for it. Going with the apocalypse theme, I hate the smell of napalm in the morning when it is in my eyeballs. <g>
