Tom,

After watching the Skins vs. KC I'm lowing my expectations for the upcoming season. Most of the starters are decent players but there is a huge drop off when it comes to the backups. The only positives that came out of the game with KC are the new punter who looks good and Fred Smoot chosen in the second round of the draft. He looks like a really good man cover corner.

I wasn't expecting much from the offense but I thought the defense would be a lot better then it showed Sunday.

I thought the Skins' biggest need was WR, especially a downfield threat. Did they address that in the off season?

The oft-injured Westbrook is back from injury for the time being. They drafted Rod Gardner (wr) in the first round. He a big tough receiver but not a speed burner. So they still need someone to stretch the field.

One thing that worried me about the Skins last year was when I saw early on that Bruce Smith was the key to the whole defense. It's not good to rely on someone so old ...

This year his backups are a bigger drop off (so far) than last year. That's a big problem that I don't see being solved this year.

Marty has a reputation for getting the most out of his players. He's saying all the right things about the upcoming season but I think this year and next year is really about clearing up the cap hangover from last year.

If this team goes 8-8 I don't think anyone will be accusing them of underachieving.
