Toward Tradition, a national pro-family oalition of Jews and Christians, welcomed President Bush's decision to strictly limit federal funding of research on embryonic stem-cells. Noting that "not all men . nor all presidents" are up to making such nuanced moral choices, Rabbi Daniel Lapin, TT's president, said that Bush "made us proud of him and of his office." Rabbi Lapin commented: "President Bush gave an inspiring speech last night. What we saw on our television screen was a good, intelligent, and sincere man wrestling with extraordinarily difficult questions and reaching a decision that exquisitely balanced competing and weighty considerations. On one hand he was confronted with the view of some very serious religious thinkers who insist that destroying human embryos, or benefiting from their destruction, is an unacceptable evil no matter what good may come from the act. On the other hand, the President keenly appreciates the potential for saving lives and healing sicknesses that may be locked in embryonic stem cells. "In a situation like this, the mature approach is to accept that our world is one where good is always mixed inextricably with evil, necessitating that we make choices which minimize evil while maximizing good. Not all men are up to making such choices, nor are all presidents. George W. Bush was brave enough to show us how he struggled to make the best decision he could in a spirit of modesty and seriousness. But then he made it and plainly told us why. That's leadership. He offered a fine model for us all in the hard decisions we are faced with in our lives. He made us proud of him and of his office. "Toward Tradition is also delighted with the President's selection of Leon Kass to further investigate the matter of embryonic stem-cell research. Professor Kass is a profoundly engaged moral philosopher, and not coincidentally a committed Jew. We expect that his contribution will be a genuine Kiddush HaShem, a sanctification of God's name." Toward Tradition is a national educational movement of Jews and Christians dedicated to fighting secular institutions that foster anti-religious bigotry, harm families, and jeopardize the future of America.
