<What gives? Is Ericsson embarrassed to be selling cdma2000 1x handsets? Are they
trying to hide from powers-that-be in the GSM world? Or are they always this subtle?>

Guess that Crow didn't go down yet, I hope it is easier for Nok...........<vbg>

The Ericsson A1228c handset is not cdma2000 1x.
It never has been. It is availble at Alltel (Mid-Atlantic Region), Cellcom (Green Bay), US Cellular. It was Erricson's first cdmaOne handset brought out after they bought the infrastructure division from Qualcomm.

You mis-read the press release if you read it to say that the A1228c is a 1X hand set.. The first parargraph says that Verizon has agreed to sell the A1228c. The second paragraph starts with the key work Furthermore.

Furthermore, the two companies are conducting trials with Ericsson handsets using CDMA2000 1XRTT
(1X) technology with mobile data transmission speeds of up to 144 Kbps.

This is a seperate item of information inserted into the body of the press release. It does not say that A1228c is being used, only unspecified Ericsson handsets using CDMA2000 1X in trials. The A1228c has been around for a long time. It has not been magically transformed into a 1X handset.

The Ericsson version of the press release is a little less confusing.

They leave the 1X stuff to the final paragraph and phrase it thus.

Another interesting fact is that the companies are now conducting trials with Ericsson handsets
using CDMA2000 1X technology. This new technology has mobile data transmission speeds of
up to 144 kilobits per second.

Be carefull when reading press releases that you don't read into them what you want to hear but which has not been explicitly stated in the release.

>> The only confirmation of 1x technology I found is SI posting
Message 14828059, an indirect confirmation since it only
cites use of the MSM5100 chip set. <<
The story cited at that link is dated 11/15/00
Qualcomm announces the first Sample shipments of the MSM5100 April 16, 2001
See qualcomm.com
Ericssons first press release about the A1228c was published Feb. 29 2000
See ericsson.com
My WAG is the A1228c uses the MSM3100

The only reason I revisted this subject was not to beat a dead horse but because ERIC_L brought the subject up again on another thread and while checking my facts, I ran across those dated press releases. The A1228c could not have been produced in commercial quantities and made available to Alltel to sell before even sample MSM5100's were available if it uses the MSM5100. And why would Alltel, Cellcom, and US Cellular be selling 1X handsets now? They haven't got 1X networks.
