(NasdaqNM:XMSR - news) on Friday rolled out its $100 million national advertising campaign in preparation for the satellite radio service's planned commercial launch on September 12. The Washington-based company, which aims to provide U.S. car listeners with digital-quality radio service via satellite, said it is debuting 60-second commercial spots on more than 19,000 movie screens in 3,000 theaters across the country. Dubbed ``Radio to the Power of X,'' the ad campaign developed by TBWA/Chiat/Day, will also appear on television, radio, magazines, newspapers, direct mail, outdoor advertising and the Internet. The movie spots will run for a month. TBWA/Chiat/Day is a unit of advertising giant Omnicom Group. (NYSE:OMC - news). XM Radio said in its news release that the ads feature artists such as B.B. King, David Bowie and Snoop Doggy Dogg and are designed to show the wide range of programming that will be available on its service. The company said last month that it planned to launch its service of 100 audio channels on September 12 in the Dallas-Fort Worth and San Diego markets. The $9.95 a month service is expected to be available nationwide by November. The launch of satellite radio programming has been long anticipated. XM Radio and its archrival Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. (NasdaqNM:SIRI - news), have been racing to be first to market with the service and sign partnership agreements with car makers. Sirius expects to launch its service in the fourth quarter. XM Radio said last month that $45 million of the $100 million budgeted for ads will be concentrated in the fourth quarter of this year. XM Radio expects to sign up 50,000 to 60,000 subscribers by the end of the year.biz.yahoo.com
