You missed a few points,
1. The Canadian government(s) have been providing a subsidy to their lumber industry
2. You make the (wrong)assumption that I'm more deeply invested in the buying of lumber(& or homes) or the building of homes than the US production of lumber or even steel studs which might compete were there a lesser on total lack of subsidy to Canadian lumber.

When the Canadians provide a subsidy to those that compete with our industry, they are $crewing all those invested in the US industries. The Japanese don't gripe because they are in no form invested in those that would compete against the subsidized Canadian lumber industry.
