Well, let's see. Maggots in compost.

I don't really think it's much of a problem. At some point in time, there are almost always maggots in the manure from our barn, and it eventually goes into the garden. It's all just part of the process of breaking down organic matter.

I guess the only thing I would be concerned about is, that if there are maggots, there are going to be flies pretty soon... and maybe that will be a problem (or maybe not really??). I would also wonder if something that went into the compost might be encouraging the flies to lay eggs there. (Could it be manure, or maybe some kind of food???). Biggest cause for them might even be the way the weather has been there. I'm guessing, from what you wrote, that you're having the same weather as we are... HIGH temperatures (up around 100 for the past couple of weeks, and HIGH humidity, but NO rain for weeks). I know that, in the past when we had goats and horses (the last of them left here in December, BTW), the fly-maggot-fly cycle would really accelerate in this kind of weather and the flies (and the maggots) would start to be a big problem at the barn if I didn't put out fly traps and stickers, etc...

Well, having said all of the above, regarding the compost, the maggots will soon be flies and be gone anyhow, so I wouldn't be worried about the situation.. especially if you won't be using the compost until the weather cools off in a few weeks time.

(However, they sure are GROSS little buggers, aren't they!! lol!)

P.S.: Muscovy ducks just LOVE maggots...so do chickens. Maybe you need a few of them around the place to keep down the flies... but then you have duck poop... Forget it... Better to put up with the maggots... (o:
