dave,

I have no idea where Australia is drifting politically. I am not sure if there is a left or right in Australia as we know it in the states. The Australian political system works so slow that changes take centuries. <g> What I like is they have a value system that is positive. They have for the last 80 years been correcting the destruction that the Europeans bestowed on the continent. In general: they respect each other (in other words they care about each other), they don't steal from each other, I did not see people chasing the almighty dollar, they take time to enjoy things (similar to the French), etc. These people are constructing building that have ascetics and will last for a long time. Not like I see here, where we will build today and tear down tomorrow.

Some one on this thread recommended that I read Bill Bryson's book In a Sunburned Country. This book gives one an excellent feeling for the people and the country.

Joan
