Russia is paranoid about rise of the Islamic Fundamentalism on its borders and inside Russia.... ironically former Soviet Union supported this phenomenon while trying to contain it inside USSR (the genee is out of the bottle now)
In addition Russia has over 1 mln of her former citizens in Israel that shaping relations among them....Surely Russia will increasingly become anti (fundamental) Islam as it increasingly threatens Russia's interests.

Actually Nadine, the reason Russia is becoming "chummier" with Israel is because of the extensive emmigration of Russian Jews to Israel. And I'm sure many of them are involved in "activities" that would be of benefit to Putin's supporters in Russia (namely money laundering).

I don't see Israel totally isolating itself from the US because they want our weapons. However, they WILL continue to pursue relations with other countries so that they are able to keep their options open.

And btw, very astute analysis about Turkey. They are DEFINITELY still a player in the region. And they have no plans on letting their secular society fall prey to religious extremism.

Btw, did you read that Egypt is threatened to send one of their mechanized armies into the Sinai?

Boy 'o Boy... It's going to be interesting to see how US equipment fares against US equipment. Both sides have been armed by the US.

Not that I think it will come to war between Egypt and Israel, but Mubarak is going to add his .02 to the political "discussion".

Re: Turkey is a rising regional power, coming into a natural alliance with Israel...

Natural?! Turkey is 90% Muslim! I think you're making the same blunder as most pundits did in 1978 about Iran: remember, the US thought that Iran was their "foul weather" ally... until they realized that their Iranian fan club amounted to nothing more than Mr Reza Pahlavi and his family.... The same holds true today with Turkey, Egypt,... The Palestinian ordeal puts a great strain on the legitimacy of (moderate/secular) Arab regimes.

Anti-Sharon demonstrations in Turkey
Turkey-Israel, Politics, 8/9/2001

Turkey witnessed demonstrations against the visit to Ankara by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

The Turkish demonstrators chanted anti-Israel slogans and labelled Sharon as "assassin" and "Nazi".

Turkish police rounded up 131 demonstrators who protested the visit. Turkish newspaper lashed out at the visit and attacked Ankara for receiving the Israeli Premier.

Turkey, meantime, rejected Israel's stances on peace negotiations and confirmed that Sharon's demand for halting violence before the start of negotiations is illogical.

Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit said at a press conference he gave with Sharon yesterday that the Isaeli demand does not benefit peace.

Meanwhile, NTV network said the talks that were held between Sharon and Prime Minister earlier yesterday showed that there might be some differences in viewpoints between Turkey and Israel as regards the Middle East peace process, and that the two sides would not let these differences affect their bilateral relations.

Re: Gustave, I do not see evidence to support your conclusions. I think your "Byzantine alliance" leaves one very major player out of the calculations...Turkey. Turkey is a rising regional power, coming into a natural alliance with Israel....

Turkish Tycoon Stabbed to Death

By BURAK BAKTIR, Associated Press Writer

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP)
- The chairman of one of Turkey's largest business holdings and a prominent member of its Jewish community was found stabbed to death Saturday, police said.

A suspect apprehended a few hours later confessed to the killing of 72-year-old Uzeyir Garih, police said. The suspect's name was not released, but local media quoted police sources as saying that he was a mentally disturbed Turkish youth and a drug addict.

Garih headed the ALARKO group, a heating, ventilating and air conditioning company that also does construction in Turkey and central Asia. The group also is involved in tourism and seafood, and has joint ventures in England, Russia, Switzerland and Austria.

He also wrote a column for the English-language Turkish Daily News in which he supported Turkey's expanding relations with Israel and Ankara's bid to join the European Union.
