Which leftists are those? Nader you mean? I think you should be criticizing the center, the moderates. That's the issue here not old-fashioned liberalism which Clinton effectively ended. The Center is where I'm at and where most people are. Unfortunately it's not where Bush is, and he's got his Energy Cartel corruption issues as well. Worst of all he's not very smart and is a terrible leader.

Protection of the environment however should cross party lines and he embraced by all. A great Republican like Teddy Roosevelt could teach this administration a thing or two.

Whatever your politics on social spending vs. taxes (more or less for the rich?), as well as social issues (sexual freedom, womens rights) or religion (Christian conservative society or secular?) we all breathe and drink the same air and water and the world expects leadership from us or else won't follow. Or maybe they'll follow the EU instead.
Sicne Bush is strongly allied with the pollutors (all of them, every one) he is stuck. He cannot lead or he is a hypocrite and he cannot wage war on the environment or he and his party will go down in defeat. Doyou care about the environment as a conservative? Or are you more the Dick Cheney type who has nevre seen a natural resource without a price tag on it?
