How in the hell did Bush get elected? Got to blame these factors:

1) Bush's tremendous record amount of initial soft money and lack of telegenic GOP opponent to sweep him into nomination

2) GOP's anxiousness to win at any cost and willingness to pull more strings in Florida

3) Bush more telegenic than Gore and more likeable in more masculine way in casual settings

4) Ralph Nader (boy did he do his own cause harm)

5) Gore taking GOP bait and distancing himself from Clinton instead of celebrating his achievements. Maybe Gore was jealous and/or angry about Monica. But he wimped out there.

6) Leiberman being Jewish (even my Jewish friends admit this could be). There is a price to pay. If Lieberman had delivered zflorida this would not be the case.

7) People forgot how mediocre a president Bush Sr. but also believed Bush Jr. was at least as compassionate and competent as his father used to be. Not. Bush Sr. was a true international player. Bush Jr. is very uncomfortable outside Texas, it seems.

8) The October Surprise energy crisis which scared people right in the midst of the election and gave Bush-Cheney the "we're experts so we can fix this" line and sense of power. I maintain this was deliberate as hell and the biggest orchestrated ripoff in history. This was criminal and it worked.

9) The far right-wing wanted it more so didn't vote for Buchanon while far-lefties celebrated Nader (idiots)

10) Monica (which was the net result of three years and 100 million dollars spend by Kenneth Starr and the GOP congress), so maybe bedroom hunting works even though that wasn't supposed to be what Whitewater was all about, a big zero otherwise.

11) People believed Bush's campaign promises, many of which he immediately broke and continues breaking. Particularly his many lies about protecting the environment.

12) People believe Bush actually had a strong education record in Texas. See today's story about how Texas school districts cheated on the state kid's exam? Or taught to the test? Education is not a strength of Bush's afterall.

13) Ruthless clever character assasination of Gore despite not deserving any of it. "Oxy Al", "I invented the internet", etc. All BS but well used.

14) Leiberman being polite and letting Cheney off the hook completely. he actually let Dick get away with coming off as compassionate.

15) Gore's waffling on styles in debates leading one to believe he was wishy-washy, basically showing his weakness.
Maybe deep-down Gore was the more insecure of the two though clearly the most qualified and right on the issues to most Americans.

So there you had it. Gore wins the popular vote and loses by a hair on a technicality in Florida. The malaise began right there and may continue for 3 more years.
