"We took on a number of graduates as trainees 18 months ago and invested a lot in those people," said Michael Couzens, a managing director at Cisco Systems Inc., the U.S.-based maker of computer network components that shed 8,500 people world-wide when sales dropped. About 200 of those laid off in Europe had recently completed the company's technical training. "Our partners were literally standing outside the front door waiting to take these people," says Mr. Couzens.
