I would suppose that amounts to re- thinking.......

More like a work-around.

If pairs of people in society, such as heterosexual and homosexual couples, elderly sisters, father and son, old friends, are committed to mutual support and want to be considered an economic unit, I don't see why society would object.

I'm indifferent to gay marriages. I agree that Nadine's solution takes care of the practical problem. I can also understand why that doesn't satisfy and wouldn't object to same-sex marriages being authorized. If same-sex marriages were authorized, I would advocate them being used more broadly than for just gay couples. I don't see why the sisters, the father and son, or the friends shouldn't use that vehicle if that provided them with some benefit. It might be a bit awkward if people assumed that those pairs were having sex, but the advantages of married status might outweigh that disadvantage.
