Thanks Mark. You are right, it is straight forward and makes more sense with a little thought. I'm not sure what I was thinking. Maybe I was stuck on calculating all PE ratios and then averaging them (using market weighting), rather than aggregating all company earnings first and then calculating PE. The prior method would create the problems I cited, but the obviously more sensible latter method would not. My head is bruised from whacking it with the heal of my hand now.
