And who sold more, and still sells variants of, 80186s than anyone else?

Actually, your statement is only true if you restrict it to x86 embedded controllers. Intel's 804x and 805x (and their variants from other manufacturers) probably are number 1 with a bullet. And then there are the PICs, HC11 and all those 4 bitters that have been around for decades...
